, not through the c.i.a. they essentially went out there, these groups of guys went out. there were targeted kills. what they did was they really stirred up a hornet's nest. >>gretchen: part of the problem was was qaddafi was working with the united states at the time of his demise. people didn't like him because he was a ruthless dictator. but he had turned andg the unit. when he was taken out, the rebel groups coming together were not necessarily all good guys. part of this book is alleging, there was a secret covert mission by the united states hand-picking each these people, and maybe that's why we haven't heard the full story about benghazi. at least that's what this 80-page book is saying. >>brian: can you imagine not telling the c.i.a. director that you're assassinating al qaeda. can you imagine not telling the ambassador. why would he be driving around the country at all basically armed without an armored car and a huge cadre of security officials if he knew that al qaeda was going to be looking for revenge because they have a habit of not liking to be assassinated? this is all going

involving then cia director david petraeus. in thousands of e-mails, several hundred were between general allen and a socialite down there in tampa. according to officials who have seen these e-mails, the vast majority were innocent about military events around tampa. a couple that some people in the obama administration and here in the pentagon thought were a little bit suspect. they had the inspector general here at the pentagon launching an investigation. after this exhausted investigation which was finally concluded and it was determined that general allen was involved in no misconduct, no inappropriate language or communications with this socialite, he was cleared of that. in the meantime, his nomination to be the supreme allied commander of europe had been put on hold. the white house has not yet although they support allen has not yet sent that nomination back to the hill and we are told that general allen may not and is strongly considering withdrawing from the nomination because he doesn't want to resurrect that controversy and put he and his family through it. one other thing. t

nomination go forward, that no cia or the department of defense cannot kill someone in america without you know, any kind of judicial proceeding. senator widen asked this, can you kill an american on american soil with a drone without a judicial hearing and brennan didn't answer the question. so, we've asked it in writing. my understanding is senator wyden has answered in writing. so if you're not going to answer no, i think that means you're telling us yes, you believe that the president has the power to kill an american in america. that is appalling. i think even overseas that if there is someone who's not in the middle of firing a gun or grenade launcher, that they really should be tried for treason if they're an american citizen, then you can proceed on with drone attacks, but really an american citizen should be tried in court here or abroad unless they're imminently in the act of firing a weapon. >> and when it comes to hagel's nomination, obviously john mccain indicating he may filibuster it. tom rex is a contributing editor for foreign policy magazine. a lot of sources in the penta

panetta and know he is your neighbor in california but captured by the mentality of the cia. this was an extremely weak national security team. obama also was ruled by the military that is how you got the surge of forces. i think he realizes he was had and that is important and why i am optimistic about the second term this is a wiser man with foreign policy but he has ended the war in iraq meandering to ending the war in afghanistan and allowing the pentagon with the motor skills of a dinosaur such as a timetable for withdrawal all obama has to do i look at the gorbachev experience, and came in 1985, gave a secret speech 1986 faugh denouncing afghanistan, had told shultz we are getting out with one year to turn around and then announced a timetable then we were gone in 89. we need to do something similar. we had 11 commanders in afghanistan in the 11 years. look at the book if the generals that is not of war where we can be successful. there is no military that is ever successful with a counterinsurgency and they have been ally in pakistan that makes the picture confusing t

and then went on to blackwater and the cia. i started speaking with him over the phone and didn't know who he was. we got comfortable with each other and he then made sure that i got in phone contact with the shooter. again, started anonymously. built up trust over a period of time and then i met him face-to-face and thus started a long relationship over a year and a quarter of hundreds of hours of discussion, interview, conversation about his life, not just the mission. >> and when you spend hundreds of hours with someone over the course of more than a year and you have dinners and drink scotch and he played with your kids, is there any danger that you become too close to the subject and you become his advocate? >> i think, howie, that the overarching answer to that is, yes, there is a danger and, no, it didn't happen. in this case, really, the point of the story was to illuminate the fact that these guys, unlike all the jason bourne movies and "zero dark thirty" and magicals and make things happen. can take a hair pin and make an atomic bomb. these guys are human beings. so, my goal was to

. >> president of his nominee for cia director john brennan accused iran of pursuing nuclear weapons in made the comment during his confirmation hearing. tehran and in taez o brennanhn enbridge >> john read your response? >> this has been the position for quite some time. even though the intelligence of all of the p-5 indicates there is not been a decision to weaponized, the belief is the iranians are moving toward a nuclear weapons capability, but in everything in order to be able to make that decision if they so choose. as a result, there is the impression the window is closing in order to be able to address this peacefully. in order to really exhaust all of the options to resolve this peacefully, there has to negotiations that are far more intense, far more serious from both sides. both sides have so far gone to the table and essentially offer the other side ultimatums' rather than engaging in proper negotiations. both sides have been working on taking or more accepting of taking a risk for the status quo or even escalation in accepting risks for peace making. >> a want ask about chuck ha

remember all that? involving the former head of the cia general petraeus? national security correspondent jennifer griffin is live at the pentagon. what is the latest you're hearing about general allen and this decision, jennifer? >> reporter: well, remember, jon, general john allen was supposed to leave as the top commander in afghanistan and got to become the supreme allied commander in europe but that's when the jill kelley e-mails interfered with that. there was a pentagon inspector general investigation into those e-mails. eventually he was cleared by that investigation. so it looked like his nomination was going to go forward but our white house correspondent, ed henry, heard from sources yesterday that in fact general allen was being pushed out. that he was in fact not going to be renominated as the supreme allied commander in europe and go to nato headquarters. that he in fact would be retiring. the defense department is pushing back on that characterization suggesting that leon panetta, the defense secretary, met with general allen just days ago. here is what panetta said yesterd

come to be a central issue in a confirmation hearing of the proposed cia director, nominee john brandon. however sir, privacy issues beyond the scope of this hearing. i use the term unmanned aircraft systems or uas considered uav or drone. as the name suggests, they are complex systems made up of not only aircraft, the supporting communications infrastructure. uas comes in a variety of shapes and sizes and can carry a wide range of missions. aviation has come a long way at a relatively short period of time thanks to american innovation and ingenuity. the list of american aviation and aerospace is very long. you may not know the details of their achievements, but i'm sure you recognize names such as clyde cessna, james snape donnell and donald douglas. howard hughes, william lane, charles lindbergh, kelley johnson just to name a few. unmanned aircraft or the next step in the evolution of modern aviation which began with two american brothers in 1803. just as a revolution in military affairs, they will also very likely transformed civilian and commercial sectors. the group in aerospace an

? cheney says it's vital to national security that good folks hold positions like secretary of state, cia director, and secretary of defense. we can all be on board with that. first off, none of the president's nominees are second rate. we don't need to point out why everyone on the wall is qualified to serve as the president's national security team. meanwhile, let's look at a few bush/cheney dandies from their cabinets there is secretary of defense donald rumsfeld. we can't forget him, can we? he botched the wars in afghanistan and iraq. he ignored critical advice from colleagues and failed to commit the correct number of troops to get the job done for those wars. bush appointed condoleezza rice his national security adviser. well, condi lied about weapons of mass destruction in iraq and played a key role in starting the war. as a reward, bush later promoted her to secretary of state. then there is fema director, how could we ever forget brownie? of course bush told brownie he was doing a heck of a job responding to hurricane katrina. but now brownie is famous for one of the biggest gov
